40% of Gen Z now prefer searching on TikTok over Google (Adobe.com)
TikTok is increasingly being used as a search engine as opposed to just being used as an Entertainment/Social media app. Data from a US commissioned study showed that nearly 40% of 18-24 year-olds, or Gen-Z, prefer to make web searches via TikTok instead of Google. Due to the popularity of TikTok many consumers from Gen Z prefer to search on TikTok as they get a quick video showcasing what they searched for. Similar to Google and Bing, TikTok uses SEO to show you what you want whether it’s a Cooking video or local marketing agencies. This is due to the consumer habits of Gen Z changing as they prefer short snappy videos instead of having to read through information.
TikTok is growing as a trusted source of information and news for all consumers, not just Gen Z. It is already very popular with Gen Z and adults are starting to use it as well. Due to TikTok having over 1.5 billion active users, there are communities who can answer almost every problem or question you have. This ranges from something as simple as looking for travel tips or advice on how to market your products. Influencers can also easily influence people on TikTok whether it is positively or negatively. For example they might do a good or bad review on a local hair salon which will affect the businesses reputation. If you can build up a good relationship with influencers you can really boost your business. People tend to trust influencers more than other sources such as Google as they feel like they know them personally and the recommendation feels personal. One disadvantage of TikTok is that it is very easy to spread misinformation as anyone can post videos in real time. This is not helped by the fact that TikTok is both a learning and entertainment app.
