Facebook Statistics
We recently wrote about the new look, but let’s now take a look at some Facebook Statistics every marketer should know in 2019!
13% of Facebook users are women aged 25-36
Facebook statistics leading light, Statista, recently found that the highest concentration of Facebook users were ages 18–44. The biggest demographic group is at 19%, men ages 25–34. They also discovered that 13% of users are women aged 25-36.
Knowing these Facebook Statistics, and others like them, are key to your targeting. At Big Gun Digital, we start all our Social Media copywriting sessions with a persona in mind. Who are we writing to, and how do we tailor our content to this persona?
As of April 2019, it was found that ten per cent of global active Facebook users were women between the ages of 18 and 24 years, and male users between the ages of 25 and 34 years constituted the biggest demographic group of Facebook users.

51% of teens use Facebook
If your content is aimed at teenagers, it seems that Facebook might not be your best bet. Facebook Statistics point to using a different channel to target teens. According to Pew, only 51% of teens use Facebook, making it the fourth most popular social network. YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat all surpass Facebook in usage and popularity with this demographic.
People in Gen Z, born between 1997 and 2012, “overwhelmingly prefer” when brands contact them on Instagram rather than through other social media channels, according to a new survey from analysts at Piper Jaffray. Seventy per cent of respondents said they preferred Instagram for brand engagement, over Facebook for example.
Instagram, in general, is extremely popular among teens, with 90% penetration among 14-to-18-year-olds, according to the report.
74% visit Facebook daily
Wake up, check Facebook. Going to bed? Quickly check Facebook first. Sound familiar? Well, you’re not alone! Of those who use Facebook, 74% of them log in every single day. Over half of these people also admit to logging in more than once a day.
Understanding Facebook Statistics and when your audience is on during the day helps you find the best times to post. You can find this engagement data through your Page Insights.
96% of Facebook users access it on mobile
An overwhelming majority of Facebook users have accessed the network via tablet or smartphone, according to Statista. Because people access Facebook from a variety of devices, the percentage numbers are over 100%.
How can you use these Facebook statistics to your advantage? When creating content and designing ads, always make sure that the mobile preview is set up correctly. If not, then uncheck the ad placement option for mobile.

43% of users get their news from Facebook
When searching for a news article online, most people go to one place – Google (other search engines are available, although not recommended!) However, 43% of Facebook users report that they get their news piped to them from Facebook. Facebook Statistics indicate that rather than seeking out news, nearly half of people get it brought to them on Facebook!
What statistics like these show us is an indication of where marketers should place their most important information, such as company news and product releases. Facebook Statistics will also allow you to see how to use hashtags or links to make your content relevant.
Users spend an average of 35 minutes a day on Facebook
In the daily routine of your average everyday user, social media use is second only to watching TV. According to Mediakix, 35 minutes a day, on average, is consumed. While TV may still be ahead of social media time spent, 2016 marked the first year where digital ad spend overtook TV’s. For Facebook’s complete suite of owned apps (Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger; excluding WhatsApp), its users are spending an average of 50 minutes each day.
At least 3% of Facebook profiles are fake
In 2018, Facebook released a report for Q1 that focused on the number of fake profiles on its platform. They noted that of the number of monthly active users they release, 3–4% of the profiles are actually fake.
That’s still approximately 88 million accounts that were removed!!
The fake account number has changed throughout the years. In 2014, it was noted to be 7% while it was 14% in 2017. The crackdown in 2018 was likely in response to the high number created during the 2016 presidential election cycle.
For marketers, these Facebook Statistics are good to know because they give you an error range for your account’s likes and engagement numbers. While a good number of fake accounts are removed at creation, some do continue to create spam and fake impressions.
85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound
If you have seen your fair share of Facebook Videos (and let’s face it, most of us have!) you’ll know that the first three seconds are the most important. They have to grab your attention. They have to reel you in. This imagery is so important because Digitday reports that 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound.
The news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Facebook has built a video ecosystem that does not require users to turn the volume up — and publishers have been more than happy to play ball.
What should you focus on instead of sound? Aside from cinematography, using text overlays, bold words and captions all go a long way.
Knowing this stat doesn’t mean you should ignore sound completely. It only means you should watch your video with and without sound to make sure all of your bases are covered. If you have narration, add your caption files so your silent viewers won’t miss out.
People spend 3x more watching live video than pre-recorded ones
Besides produced videos, Facebook’s ‘Live’ streaming feature has taken off among users and pages alike. Recent studies show that those who watch videos on Facebook will spend three times as long watching a live video than a produced on.
If your Facebook Strategy includes videos, Live ones are a must-try, especially if your goal is more impressions and engagement. To make sure that your Live videos will be seen in real-time, schedule posts beforehand to publicize just like you would any other event you host.
Best time to post on Facebook is weekdays 10 am to 3 pm
Sprout is something of a final word on Social as far as we’re concerned! Their guide to social media outlines the best times to post on any channel. What days should you post for the most engagement?
Their report shows that noon midweek is some of the most engaging time to post. Note that this report is an average across all collected data. The report does break it down into different page categories, so be sure to check out your industry. Facebook Statistics like this highlight the importance of planning your strategies in advance.
Average organic reach is 6.4% of Page Likes
The average organic reach of Facebook Pages has steadily dropped with every newsfeed algorithm update. A December 2018 study suggests that this is now as little as 6.4%. Need for panic? Not really. Facebook is not the most subtle of creatures and it has been making it clear for years that it wants marketers to pay to use it.
